SHIBA Volunteer Training Program |
|
SHIBA relies on trained volunteers in every corner of the state to help people with Medicare. SHIBA staff teach classes on volunteering and Medicare to groups of volunteers in different parts of the state throughout the year. All of these trainings are open to all new and experienced SHIBA volunteers.
We offer training so that people who want to volunteer but who cannot attend classes because of distance or time constraints also can be trained. Experienced volunteers can brush up their skills by reviewing the materials below.
Hundreds of successful volunteers have been trained using the professionally-developed SHIBA Volunteer Training Program. Most find that they learn the fastest by starting with the training Overview and then working through the sections in order from Section 1 through Section 8. This is because from Section 1 on, each section builds upon information taught in the previous sections.
If you've been accepted as a SHIBA volunteer-in-training, start by selecting the SHIBA Overview from the list below. As you complete each section, you will have an opportunity to take a Review test and submit it for assessment. Then select the next section. A SHIBA Field Officer will inform you when you have successfully submitted all of the reviews. You will then receive training from a SHIBA Coordinator on filling out Record of Assistance forms for your client contacts. We will mail you a Memorandum of Agreement to sign, and upon receiving your agreement we will assign you a volunteer number. You will then have 10 hours of internship with another volunteer. Once you've completed your internship, you will become a certified SHIBA volunteer, and will receive a Certificate, name badge and business cards. You will work directly under a SHIBA Coordinator and will be required to assist clients and to attend 2 hour BI-monthly (every other month) volunteer meetings.
Have fun learning, and thank you for your interest in SHIBA! Note: If you would like a copy of our training sections in Microsoft Word format (.doc), please e-mail SHIBA.
