National Courts

Jeanne E. Davidson, Director

Welcome to the website of the National Courts Section of the Department of Justice. The intent of this site is to provide an overview both of the substantive work performed by National Courts and of employment with the Section. National Courts is one of the largest and most active litigating sections in the Department. We are a part of the Commercial Litigation Branch, which is in turn part of the Civil Division, one the Department's five major litigating components. We handle matters in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States Court of International Trade, as well as occasional matters in other federal district and circuit courts and in administrative tribunals. Our practice areas include government contracts, constitutional claims, pay claims, personnel appeals, veterans benefits appeals, and international trade matters.

A History of National Courts: This page provides a brief history of National Courts, with a focus on the establishment of our predecessor offices in the 1800s.

Our Appellate Practice: This page discusses our appellate practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and other federal appellate courts.

Our Trial Practice: This page discusses our trial practice before the United States Court of Federal Claims, the United States Court of International Trade, and other fora.

Working for National Courts: This page provides information concerning employment with National Courts. It contains information of interest to prospective applicants, including attorneys, support staff, and interns. The Civil Division has been ranked one of the best places to work in the Federal government.
