The mission of Communicable Disease Control & Surveillance (CDCS) is to monitor communicable diseases in NH. The Surveillance unit maintains the mandatory reportable disease system and is responsible for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting NH infectious disease data. The Disease Control unit is responsible for infectious disease control activities, case follow-up, patient and provider education and disease outbreak investigation.
The Disease Control unit is staffed by a physician, five Public Health Nurses (PHNs) in DHHS District Offices, two PHNs in the Bureau's central office in Concord, and several program coordinators. The Disease Control unit also administers the West Nile Virus, Hepatitis C and Tuberculosis programs.
The Surveillance unit is staffed by epidemiologists and surveillance coordinators for four main program areas:
- Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance,
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Surveillance,
- Foodborne Disease Surveillance, and
- Bioterrorism Surveillance.
The Surveillance unit is also the liaison to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for NH's nationally reportable diseases.
