Accepting Donations

The Louisiana Katrina Senior Relief Fund is now accepting donations. Anyone wishing to donate should make checks payable to and mail to:

Capital Area Agency on Aging will serve as the administrative-agent to collect and disburse these funds under the direction of the Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs (GOEA).

The senior relief fund does not circumvent the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation located at http://www.la.gov.

Louisiana Senior Relief Program

Senior Relief ProgramCapital Area Agency on Aging with the support of The Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs is pleased to offer assistance to any Louisiana senior resident directly impacted by declared disasters, most recently Hurricanes Katrina and/or Rita. Funds will be made available to any Council on Aging or Area Agency on Aging for the provision of services to elders impacted by the disaster. The service award value can range from $50.00 to $1,000. Additional awards may be available under extenuating circumstances.

These funds will be disbursed to Councils on Aging or Area Agencies on Aging to be used for direct expenses related to home repair, debris removal, medicine, replacement of items necessary for daily living, and other storm-related expenses. This one-time assistance is to help seniors with services that are not accessible elsewhere.

Eligibility for Grants
Any person aged 60 and above, who has suffered personal damages as a result of the hurricanes is eligible.

Requirements
Seniors are to request assistance from their local Council on Aging. Information provided will be kept confidential and may be reviewed only by individuals involved in administering the disaster relief fund. Applicants must have exhausted other sources for assistance, i.e., insurance policies, FEMA, Red Cross, etc.
