Helpful Hints for Using CM/ECF in the Eastern District of North Carolina

  • On Monday, February 14, 2005, the court began accepting credit card payments over the internet through Pay.gov. The process works basically the same as when purchases are made on the internet. There are some differences in the docket events. When prompted to insert Fee Paid or Fee Not Required, type in the appropriate response. When prompted with the question "Is the Filing Fee Required", insert y or n. When inserting y, the credit card module will be presented at the end of the docket transaction. There are two options when the payment screen appears - Pay Now or Continue Filing. The continue filing feature will allow all case opening or docket entries necessary to be made without having to pay at the end of each event. At the end of the last event, choose Pay Now in order to pay all outstanding fees at once. Do not use the "Back" button during the payment process and do not press the "Make Payment" button more than once. In the event you inadvertently forget to pay before disconnecting, you can login to CM/ECF to complete the payment process. To do so, access Internet Payments Due under Utilities. The Pay Now or Continue Filing options will be presented. You should choose Pay Now to complete the credit card transaction. Additionally, an automated email reminder message will be sent from the court each day at 7:30 PM until all fees have been paid. If payment has not been made at the end of the second day, the user account will be locked to prevent further filings and the court will enter an order to show cause as to why the case, adversary proceeding, or motion should not be dismissed for failure to pay the required filing fee.
