Projects
Introduction
Gulf of Maine Coastal Program works with partners to identify, restore and permanently protect important habitat. We focus our interests on projects that provide significant benefits for migratory birds, searun fish and federally threatened and endangered species. For a fact sheet summarizing our activities and accomplishments, view "What We've Accomplished with Partners..." (139 KB PDF).
Since the early 1990s, we have worked actively with many partners–-including other federal and state agencies, statewide and nationally based conservation groups, local communities, land trusts and private landowners to:
- identify and assess habitat values,
- build capacity of grassroots partners to become self-sustaining and effective,
- permanently protect nearly 1.68 million acres of important fish and wildlife habitat at more than 340 sites,
- restore more than 160 wetlands, nesting islands, rivers and grasslands, and
- successfully compete for more than $43 million in federal funding sources directed to habitat protection and restoration projects in Maine
- leverage federal funds with state and private dollars at a raio of $1 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to $4 from other federal, state and private sources.
