Deer Hunting

Deer hunting on the refuge is permitted during one of the primitive weapons hunt. The primary goal of this hunt is to keep an already abundant white-tailed deer population in check.

The first hunt of the season will be a Youth Hunter any-sex hunt, held November 7 - 8, 2009. All hunters will be required to attend a Pre-Hunt Orientation Meeting on November 6, 2009. Meeting times will be posted later this year. Antlered deer must have a least one antler with at least 4 points.

The second hunt of the season will be a muzzleloader deer hunt, held on December 5 - 6, 2009. Hunters must take and check-in deer at the refuge hunting headquarters. Hunter will be required to attend a Pre-Hunt Orientation Meeting on December 4, 2009. Meeting time will be posted later in the year. In addition to refuge deer hunts mentioned above, a special hunt occurs annually for physically-disabled persons. Hunters are provided with a guide, pre-constructed blind, lunch, and other assistance as needed. If you are interested in participating in this hunt, please contact the Refuge staff.
