Wildlife comes first on all lands within the National Wildlife Refuge System. Human activities must be compatible with the needs of wildlife. Six uses are encouraged when appropriate: hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education and interpretation. The Detroit Lakes District offers all of these opportunities and more.

Recreational opportunities abound on over 168 units and nearly 45,000 acres of land. The Detroit Lakes District is spread across three major biomes in Minnesota, from the Red River Valley floodplain, to the glacial moraine/prairie pothole region, to the hardwood/coniferous forest as you travel west to east. Most WPAs are located in the rolling prairie wetland portion of the District, and present some beautiful prairie scenery. WPAs offer many recreational activities including wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing and berry-picking. All WPAs are open to public hunting except for several that are posted "closed."
