Resident Wildlife
White-tailed deer, fox squirrels, raccoon, coyote, beaver, muskrat, opossum, and cottontail rabbits are commonly seen on the refuge. Rarely, a wandering bull moose may appear. Only white tailed deer are hunted on the refuge, and this is during a special primitive weapons hunt.
River otter are present, but are not often seen. Otter were reintroduced onto the refuge in 1982 by the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the success of the experiment lead to a state-wide reintroduction program.
Frog and toad surveys in past years have detected four species: western chorus frog, southern leopard frog, gray tree frog, and northern spring peeper.
