Promax
Promax, a product of Landmark Graphics Corp. (LGC), is an interactive package that uses a graphical interface on a Unix-based platform. Processing flows are created by adding processing modules. This graphical user interface allows for a short learning curve and does not require the user to have knowledge of the Unix operating system. Typical flows will include data input (SEG-Y or internal format), filters, gains, and on screen or hardcopy seismic trace display. Hardcopy plots are in CGM+ format. We typically plot CGM+ files with a CGM+ interpreter/driver that formats the plot for an inkjet plotter. Promax has the capability to export or import seismic trace data to and from Seisworks (LGC) seismic interpretation software.
SIOSEIS
SIOSEIS was developed and is maintained by Paul Henkart of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO). The SIOSEIS interface uses Unix shell scripts enabling complex jobs to be easily modified and rerun. All user variables are described via free field, order independent, named parameters. Another advantage of SIOSEIS is that it was developed primarily for processing of marine seismic data. Also, SIOSEIS processes have been designed to account for delays in recording time which are typical in marine seismic data. Trace data can be displayed on screen as a Sun raster format or on an inkjet plotter. The Sea-floor Mapping Group maintains a site license of SIOSEIS. The software is somewhat portable and can be run under Unix operating environments on a variety of computers. This allows the use of SIOSEIS on more than one platform and has been proven particularly useful in seagoing applications.
Seismic Unix
Seismic Unix (SU) is a seismic processing package that was developed and is maintained by the Colorado School of Mines, Center for Wave Phenomena (CWP). Like SIOSEIS, SU can be run from Linux shell scripts. The software is free and the source code is readily available. This allows for customization and contribution to the source code from users. Trace data are displayed in PostScript format allowing for output to any PostScript printer/plotter or on screen display with a PostScript viewer. The PostScript plots can also be easily converted to standard image/raster format. Seismic Unix is portable to almost any computer with the Unix operating system that has an ANSI C compiler or the GNU C compiler. This portability makes the package useful for seagoing applications. SU is primarily installed on Intel based computers with the Linux operating system, MAC OS X, or IRIX operating systems. The cost of maintaining several seismic processing systems is not prohibitive, due to the combination of the freely available SU software, the essentially free Linux operating system, and inexpensive Intel based hardware.
