A paper by Stan Benjamin and co-authors describing the Rapid Update Cycle analysis system and discussing some issues associated with high-frequency data assimilation cycling has received one of the 2005 OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Awards.

Improved Aviation/Severe Weather Forecasts through RUC Implementation

The GSD-developed Rapid Update Cycle, a very-short range forecast system used by the National Weather Service, was upgraded on July 11. Key users of this system include NWS and FAA aviation forecasters and NWS severe weather forecasters.

NOAA's VACT Used to Evaluate Augustine Volcano Eruptions

The Volcanic Ash Coordination Tool (VACT) developed by NOAA's Global Systems Division (GSD) was used in real time to evaluate location, areal extent, and movement of ash from the recent eruptions of Mt. Augustine in Alaska.
