La biografía de la Líder Pelosi
La Congresista demócrata Nancy Pelosi es la Presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes. Ella ha representado al 8º distrito de California, que incluye la ciudad de San Francisco. En Noviembre del 2007, Pelosi hizo historia en los Estados Unidos cuando los congresistas demócratas la eligieron como Presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes, la primera mujer de desempeñar este puesto.
Desde el 2002, Pelosi ha dirigido su partido político en el nivel nacional como la Líder Demócrata de la Cámara de Representantes. Como tal, la congresista ha sido un ejemplo de unificación dentro de su Caucus, más que cualquier otro líder en los últimos 50 años. Bajo su liderazgo los demócratas en la Cámara de Representantes votaron con uniformidad el 88% de las veces el año pasado, como indica un estudio en la prestigiosa revista Congressional Quarterly.
Pelosi tiene un fuerte record en la defensa de derechos humanos y los temas importantes para las familias latinas. Como Líder, fundó un Grupo de Trabajo Hispano para unir el Caucus Congresional Hispano y los congresistas demócratas—que son de distritos con una grande población latina—, en el desarrollo de estrategias respeto a la política y los mensajes que encajen los temas de importancia para los hispanos.
Pelosi ha encabezado la lucha de poner a fin las disparidades de las minorías. La Congresista ha luchado para aumentar fondos para la educación bilingüe, instituciones que proveen servicios a hispanos, para los trabajadores emigrantes, centros de salud comunitarios y programas para los negocios pequeños. Este año el Minority Business RoundTable le otorgó con el premio de Liderazgo en el Congreso por parte del por sus esfuerzos en la promoción de oportunidades para los empresarios minorías.
Pelosi ha abogado por una reforma de inmigración integral con el Caucus Congresional Hispano. La Líder cree que los Estados Unidos debe continuar su noble tradición de dar la bienvenida a inmigrantes de todas partes del mundo, y quiere que nuestras leyes de inmigración reflejen esta herencia común.
Pelosi viene de una larga tradición de servicio público. Su padre, Thomas D’ Alejandro hijo, fue alcalde de Baltimore por unos 12 años, después de representar a la ciudad por cinco mandatos en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos. Su hermano, Thomas D’Alesandro III, también fue alcalde de Baltimore.
Pelosi se graduó de Trinity College en Washington, D.C. en 1962. Pelosi y su esposo Paul Pelosi, de San Francisco, tienen cincos hijos: Nancy Corinee, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul y Alexandra, y tienen seis nietos.
