Post-doctoral Hydrologist (Posted 24 October 2008)

Description: The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and Stanford University together seek an hydrologist for the Natural Capital Project. We are developing tools to model and map the distribution of biodiversity and the flow of multiple ecosystem services across land- and seascapes, with a focus on coastal and marine services.

We seek an imaginative individual for a 2 year post-doc to explore and integrate models of water-related ecosystem services with biophysical and socio-economic models of other services across the terrestrial-marine interface. The post-doc will develop, maintain, and improve hydrology models that feed into a suite of production function models of key ecosystem services (fisheries, tourism and recreation, shoreline protection, etc.).

Together, these models will provide a spatially-explicit tool that tracks the production and valuation of ecosystem services. This tool, named InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) is intended to aid in the support of coastal and marine management decisions and to be general and widely applicable, so applicants must be passionate about creating simple, elegant, scientifically robust models for decision-making purposes. The post-doc will and analyze data to parameterize these models in diverse sites and decision-making contexts.

The position is based at Stanford University with Gretchen Daily and will require extensive interaction with interdisciplinary teams and travel.

Required Qualifications:

    • A Ph.D. in hydrology, water resources, quantitative ecosystem sciences, or a related field
    • Experience conducting quantitative analyses and modeling with hydrographic and land use data at the land-sea interface
    • Experience in water quality, sediment deposition, coastal zone erosion, and developing and applying regional hydrology models in the context of coastal issues
    • Experience integrating hydrology models with other biological, physical, social, or economic models
    • Experience working with collaborators from diverse backgrounds and capacity and interest to work with interdisciplinary teams
    • Excellent communication and computer skills

Applications:

For full consideration, applications including a cover letter, CV, and the names of three references must be received at with the subject line “Hydrologist” by Dec. 1, 2008.

Stanford University is committed to equal opportunity through affirmative action in employment and we are especially eager to identify minority persons and women with appropriate qualifications.

Post-doctoral Oceanographer (Posted 24 October 2008)

Description: The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and Stanford University together seek an oceanographer for the Natural Capital Project. We are developing tools to model and map the distribution of biodiversity and the flow of multiple ecosystem services across land- and seascapes, with a focus on coastal and marine services.

We seek an imaginative individual for a 2 year post-doc to support development, documentation, and application of the marine InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) models. The successful applicant will help design and implement a marine biophysical model that can be linked to hydrological, ecological, and socio-economic models of marine ecosystem services (fisheries, shoreline protection, tourism and recreation, etc.) created by other postdoctoral researchers and project collaborators.

Together, these models will provide a spatially-explicit tool that tracks the production and valuation of ecosystem services. The models are intended to aid in the support of coast and marine management decisions and to be general and widely applicable, so applicants must be passionate about creating simple, elegant, scientifically robust models for decision-making purposes. The post-doc will also analyze data to parameterize these models in diverse sites and decision-making contexts.

The position is based at Stanford University with Gretchen Daily and will require extensive interaction with interdisciplinary teams and travel. Interaction with oceanographers and marine scientists at Hopkins Marine Station and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute is also expected.

Required Qualifications:

    • A Ph.D. in oceanography, quantitative ecosystem sciences, or a related field
    • Experience conducting quantitative analyses and modeling with oceanographic data
    • Experience integrating oceanographic models with other biological, physical, social, or economic models
