COLLARDS
(Brassica oleracea)

SOIL pH 5.5 to 6.5 -  Start collard seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant outside 3 weeks before the last spring frost, spacing 12 to 18 inches apart. To avoid insect damage, cover the entire row with a floating row cover at planting time, keeping it in place until harvest time.  Also does well grown as a fall crop. Start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost, transplanting outside in early fall ( 3 to 4 weeks before the first frost) and harvest into early winter.

#3001 - GEORGIA   75 days - This old time standard variety has huge cabbage-like, blue-green, lightly crumpled leaves. This non-heading type grows 31 inches tall and tolerates both heat and poor soil conditions.

#3003 - MORRIS HEADING  52-85 days - An old time favorite that's very slow to bolt.  The 1 1/2 - 2 foot plants have loose, heavy heads with short stems and smooth dark-green leaves with light green veins.  Delicious flavor.

#3002 - VATES   75 days - This non-heading variety has dark green, slick, crumpled leaves on 30 inch plants, and is bolt and frost resistant.  Winter hardy in southern and mid -Atlantic states.

KALE
(Brassica oleracea)

Soil pH 5.5 to 6.5 - Kale is best grown as a fall crop, for the summer heat makes the leaves bitter. Start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost.  Transplant outside 3 to 4 weeks later, spacing 12 to 18 inches between the plants. To avoid insect damage, cover the entire row with a floating row cover at planting time, removing only to harvest your crop.  For best flavor, harvest after the leaves have received a light frost.  Kale is very hardy and may be harvested well into the fall and early winter.

#3005 - DWARF BLUE CURLED   60 days - The variety grows only 12 to 15 inches, and has finely curled, blue/green leaves. A good variety for the northern states since it withstands cold weather.

#3006 - EARLY SIBERIAN   65 days - This hardy and fast growing variety grows 14 inches tall, and has huge, slightly curled, blue/green leaves.   An excellent choice for southern states.

#3012 - LACINTO 60-90 days -This heirloom dates back to the 18th century Tuscany region of Italy. The unusual, blue-green leaves are 3" wide by 10" long on the loosely formed plants. Very decorative in the garden; extremely winter hardy.

#3008 - RUSSIAN RED  55 days - An heirloom favorite of many!  The red, frilly leaves with purple veins are oak-leafed shaped and are very tender and tasty.  An old, rare variety that dates back to 1885.

#3007 - WINTER RED   50 days - Excellent variety rich in vitamins.  The dark green, oak leaf cut leaves change to  red and purple hues after a fall frost, giving way to  tender and sweet, rich, dark green kale when cooked.  Very disease resistant.

MUSTARD GREENS
(Brassica juncea)

Soil pH 5.5 to 7.5 - Mustard greens are best grown as a fall crop, as the summer heat makes the leaves tough and strong flavored. Start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost. Transplant outside, spacing 4 to 6 inches apart, a few  weeks before the first fall frost, choosing a sunny to partially shaded location. Or, if you prefer, the seeds may be sown directly into the garden 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost.  Harvest the leaves in cool weather. You can grow a spring crop, but remember to harvest the leaves before the summer heat sets in.  To avoid insect damage, cover the entire row with a floating row cover at planting time, temporarily removing to thin the plants, and then replacing until harvest time.

#3009 - GREEN WAVE   43 days - This "All American Winner" in 1957 does well in all areas of the United States.  The dark green, deeply frilled leaves, has a spicy, hot flavor!

#3010 - SOUTHERN GIANT CURLED   50 days - This slow-bolting variety is an excellent choice for southern states. The mild flavored plants grow 18- 24 inches, and have large, bright green, curled leaves. Tasty!

#3011 - TENDERGREEN   35 days -  This heat and drought resistant variety has oblong, smooth green leaves, with a very distinct, mild flavor.   Matures extra early!

OKRA
(Abelmoschus esculentus)

Soil pH 6.0 to 6.5 - Sow okra seeds outside in spring, after all danger of frost has passed when the soil temperature has reached 70F.  Sow 2 to 3 seeds every 12 inches, eventually thinning to one plant every foot. Okra can be planted in a wide, 3 to 4 foot row,  for maximum production in a small area.  Harvest the pods when they reach a size of 2 to 4 inches.

#3013 - CLEMSON SPINELESS   60 days - This "All American Selection" winner  was first introduced in 1939.  The 4 foot plants produce ample amounts of dark green, high quality pods.  Best picked when pods are
2 1/2 to 3 inches long.  The most popular okra grown in the U.S. today!

3018 - STAR OF DAVID  60-75 days - This terrific heirloom variety hails from Hyde County, North Carolina and received its name since the cross-sections of the pods look like the Star of David.  The flat pods grow 5-6" by 1½" and have purple coloration on the top of the leaf petioles and leaf veins. Great producer if kept well picked!

#3019 - SILVER QUEEN  80 days – Very productive, the tall, 6 foot plants produce plenty of 7 inch, light green, great tasting pods.  Best picked when young.  A rare variety that’s sure to become a favorite.

TURNIP GREENS
(Brassica rapa)

Soil pH 5.5 to 6.5 - Sow the seeds outside 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost.  To sow, plant the seeds in a wide row, 1 inch apart, in all directions.  Thin the crop, leaving an inch between plants.  Begin harvesting the leaves in approximately 30 days. To avoid insect damage, cover the entire row with a floating row cover at planting time, removing temporarily to thin the plants, and then replacing until harvest time.

#3030 - SEVEN TOP   50 days - A variety grown only for it's tops, as the roots are not edible. The large, dark green leaves grow 20 inches high, and have a very fine flavor!

SOUTHERN PEAS
(Vigna unguiculata subsp.)

Soil pH. - 6.0 - Plant southern peas after all danger of frost has past.  Do not plant too soon!  If the soil has not warmed sufficiently, the seeds will rot in the ground before germinating.  To sow, plant the seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep, spacing 4 inches between the plants, in rows 2 feet apart.  For an earlier crop, place black plastic over the row one week before planting.  Slit the plastic with an X mark every 4 inches, and plant 2 seeds in each opening.  Make sure the soil underneath the plastic is thoroughly tilled.  To harvest, pick in the green shell stage, when the peas are fully developed, but not yet hard.  You may also let them ripen and store as dried peas.

3040 - CALIFORNIA BLACK EYE PEA    65 days - This all time southern favorite can be used either green in the summer or dried in the winter.  This heavy yielding, sweet flavored variety has 6 to 7 inch, well filled pods.

3042 - KNUCKLE PURPLE HULL   60 – 80 days  - A brown sugar crowder type that has a purple hull when mature.  The strong, erect, bush plants form big, plump, dark-brown peas that taste great.
