Soil pH 5.5 to 7.5 - Mustard greens are best grown as a fall crop, as the summer heat makes the leaves tough and strong flavored. Start the seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost. Transplant outside, spacing 4 to 6 inches apart, a few weeks before the first fall frost, choosing a sunny to partially shaded location. Or, if you prefer, the seeds may be sown directly into the garden 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost. Harvest the leaves in cool weather. If the soil has not warmed sufficiently, the seeds will rot in the ground before germinating. To sow, plant the seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep, spacing 4 inches between the plants, in rows 2 feet apart. For an earlier crop, place black plastic over the row one week before planting. Slit the plastic with an X mark every 4 inches, and plant 2 seeds in each opening.
