DECEMBER 1st, 2005 IS
WORLD AIDS DAY |
|
In 2003, approximately 40 million people around the world were
living with HIV/AIDS, including 2.5 million children under the age
of fifteen1. More than 900,000 cases of
AIDS have been reported in the United States since 19812;
and an estimated 40,000 Americans become infected with HIV every
year3. At the end of 2003, an estimated
one million persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS,
with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection4.
HIV infection is the sixth leading cause of death for people who are
25-44 years old in the United States5. |
HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects minorities. Racial and ethnic
minority populations in the United States, primarily African
Americans and Hispanics, constitute 58% of the AIDS cases reported
since the epidemic began6. For example,
although African American and Hispanic/Latino persons represent
about one-quarter of the country抯 population7,
more than two-thirds (70.0%) of new AIDS cases reported to CDC are
among these populations4. |
More Examples of Important Disparities |
|
|
In 2001, HIV/AIDS was among the top three causes of death for
African American men aged 25-54 years and among the top 4 causes of
death for African American women aged 20-54 years8. |
|
|
AIDS is a leading cause of death among African-American men ages
25-446, and African American women ages
25-34 years (2003)9. |
|
|
As of December 2003, 67% of all women reported with AIDS were
African American and 16% were Hispanic/Latina6. |
|
|
Of the 59 pediatric AIDS cases reported in 2003, 40 were in African
Americans (67.8%) and 7 were in Hispanics/Latinos (11.9%)6. |
