Healing comes from within. Our traditions keep us healthy.

Advocacy

Advocacy Services supports the interests, needs and rights of Aboriginal patients in hospital. The advocate receives and resolves health and human service complaints affecting patients, addresses Aboriginal patient concerns, provides advice regarding resources or services and works with community programs to improve patient care. Advocacy Services works with patients and families within the hospital system and at a regional level to ensure holistic healing plans.

In addition, Aboriginal Health Programs partners with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs to address advocacy needs of First Nations clients. The AMC patient advocate works collaboratively with WRHA programs and services as part of the Aboriginal Health Programs team to address the health issues and concerns of First Nations clients seeking health services in the Winnipeg health region.

Discharge Planning

Coordinating services for Aboriginal patients returning to rural or remote communities can be complex. Patients are often required to travel to Winnipeg to receive health care services, and a coordinated approach to discharge planning within Winnipeg and between Winnipeg and other regions is an important aspect of care. Discharge planning coordinators work with interpreter/resource workers to plan complex discharges for Aboriginal patients, and ensure that the patients are fully aware of services available. These services may include housing arrangements, transportation and/or information about prescription medication.

Interpreter Services

All patients have the right to have medical information interpreted into their primary language so they can make informed decisions about their care. The ability to communicate without language barriers improves the quality of care that patients receive, and decreases the risk of medical errors. Our interpreters have special training in medical terminology and function as members of the health care team. They facilitate communication between health providers and patients by providing interpretation in Swampy Cree, Ojibway and Oji-Cree/Island Lake dialect.

The community project coordinator works with key stakeholders to identify specific needs and priorities, develop awareness and understanding of existing health services and bridge gaps in service to Aboriginal people through identification of appropriate community resources and services.
