- perennial from 0.6 to 1.5 metres tall with thick creeping
rootstocks; short-stalked oval leaves covered with fine hairs;
pinkish fragrant flowers are arranged in ball-like clusters at top
of stem and in leaf axils; all plant parts contain a sticky, white
juice (latex); flowers produce grayish pods which split open in
fall to release hundreds of tufted airborne seeds
- the closely related common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)
is being researched for fibre production
