Change expected to decrease spam for Exchange users

As Purdue continues efforts to reduce spam, ITaP is making a change that affects incoming email for all Exchange users. Most Purdue Exchange users will not notice anything different after the change, but some Exchange users need to prepare for the change coming on Jan. 22.

Emails sent to username@exchange.purdue.edu from outside the Purdue West Lafayette campus will not be delivered, and the sender is likely to receive a delivery failed notice.

Exchange users who need to take steps to prepare for the change are those who have given their email address as username@exchange.purdue.edu to contacts outside of the Purdue West Lafayette campus. They need to provide the username@purdue.edu email address to mailing lists and other contacts.

“As long as you have advertised your email address as username@purdue.edu, then your email will not be bounced back to the sender. From now on it will be important to provide others with your email address as username@purdue.edu, especially when subscribing to mailing lists or giving your contact information on the Web,” said Ed Evans, director of software services for ITaP.

Campus users can view scheduled changes for Exchange and other ITaP services by following the Change Management Program link to “ITaP,” then following the link to “Upcoming Changes” at the ITaP Change Management Web page: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/infrastructure/operations/change.
