  • 2009 INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE: Two positions are available March 1 through November 1, 2009, with housing and stipend, that will incorporate responsibilities in the areas of livestock, cheesemaking, market gardening and ag education (for children); Specific job descriptions will be crafted to match candidates depending upon skills, background and interests. Generally, one intern will be hired for each area of primarily gardening or livestock responsibilities. Ideal candidates must be hard working, interested in sustainable agriculture with an emphasis on goats, produce for CSA/market or ag education for young children.   • HELP WANTED: We are a diversified fruit orchard in southern New York, looking for a young, motivated, and energetic individual or couple to take on all the aspects of production of 3-4 acres of organic vegetable garden. Responsibilities will include planning, ground prep, planting, weed and pest control and harvest, but will also include oversight of interns and/or field workers, and occasional other farm activities, like work in our farm stand and at farmer's markets in New York City. We would like someone with at least a year of growing experience on a farm. A knowledge of organic or biodynamic practices is a major plus.  Farm currently has 100 acres in cultivation: primarily apples, but with other fruit-- peaches, plums, cherries, and berries. Also, a flock of 600 pasture-raised laying hens, broilers in "chicken-tractors", and a greenhouse. Long term goals for the farm include development of a CSA, gradual expansion of vegetable production to 7 or more acres, and development of community outreach and educational programs.   • 2009 APPRENTICES NEEDED: Quail Hill Farm is seeking apprentices for the 2009 season. Since it was established in 1990, Quail Hill Farm has grown to 30 acres of production. The farm serves over 200 families, and also provides produce to a local school, nearby restaurants, a farmers' market, and food pantries. Apprentices are involved in all aspects of the farm: seeding, greenhouse production, soil mix preparation, composting, cultivating, harvesting, Farmers' Market, working with CSA members. During the course of the full season, apprentices are given information and time to learn organic farming's essential skills, CSA operation, and to observe the conservation efforts of the Peconic Land Trust. We are looking for an experienced apprentice who is a hard worker, curious, self-motivated, and has a sincere interest in sustainability. Garden of Eve is an 80-acre organic for-profit farm located on Long Island’s North Fork 5 min from the beach. We cultivate 30 acres of mixed vegetables, 3 acres of cut flowers, have a flock of 1000 laying hens, and a few cows, sheep, and goats. We sell produce to 700 CSA members at ten locations in NYC and on Long Island, to local residents from a busy farm stand on the farm, and at Greenmarket in Brooklyn and farmers markets on Long Island. If you are interested in learning how to develop and run your own diverse sustainable farm to sustain you and your family someday financially as well as spiritually, you will find working with us very interesting. We hustle. Time commitment is approximately 55 hrs per week (i.e. 8 am – 5 pm 6 days per week), with one full day off.   • SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE INTERNSHIPS: The Glynwood Center www.glynwood.org is hiring two 10-month interns for the 2009 season. The interns will be involved in all aspects of vegetable production for a 50 member CSA in Cold Spring, NY. Work includes  greenhouse management, seed bed preparation, planting, compost management, sustainable weed management and pest control, working with a draft horse, direct marketing, record keeping, crop planning, livestock chores, farm-based education, and facilitation of special events. We are committed to internship education. Interns are encouraged to participate in CRAFT (meetings for farmers in training) and NOFA events. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds and to work in all weather. Compensation includes an $800 monthly stipend, on-farm housing and garden produce.   • ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER: Phillies Bridge Farm Project is hiring an Assistant Farm Manager for the upcoming 2009 season. The farm follows organic practices under the CSA model and is now entering its fifteenth season. The Assistant will work with the Farm Manager in many aspects of running a six acre garden and caring for a small flock of sheep and laying hens. Responsibilities will be split between the Farm Manager and the Assistant dependent upon interest. This may include preparing a planting calendar, managing livestock and pasture, coordinating produce sales with local businesses, daily chore routines, aiding in educational programs for interns and school groups, and varied greenhouse work. The Assistant will also be involved in the day-to-day operation of a non-profit organization.   • FARMER OR CO-FARMERS NEEDED FOR 2009: Common Ground Farm is a community supported agriculture project entering its eighth year in Southern Dutchess County NY. Located on the grounds of Stonykill Environmental Center, the farm is in the heart of the beautiful Hudson Valley, near Beacon, NY. Our organization farms for over 200 families through our CSA share program as well as two local farmers markets. We are a charitable and educational organization working to connect the community to the farm and improve access to healthy food for all. Our farmer will have the support of shareholder volunteers, an executive director who runs the organization as well as interns. While not certified organic, we are chemical free and sustainable and signers to the NOFA Farmer’s Pledge.   • OPPORTUNITIES for 18-25 Year-olds in Broome/Tioga: The Rural Health Network of South Central New York, Inc. has received funding to expand the Rural Health Service Corps program.  The 2008 – 2009 program will begin this fall.  The Rural Health Service Corps is an AmeriCorps National Service Program whose purpose is to provide meaningful service opportunities for young people committed to improving the health and lives of those living in South Central New York State.  The Rural Health Service Corps is recruiting applicants between the ages of 18-25 to fill fifteen (15) full-time, 1700 hour positions and eight (8) part-time positions.  Full time positions will start before December 31, 2008.  All full and part-time positions must be completed by December 31, 2009.  All positions provide a living allowance, educational award and college loan deferment while serving.  Health insurance is provided for full-time positions only.  Financial support for child care is available for full-time members, if needed.
