Columbia River with Barge

Columbia and Lower Willamette Rivers

The Columbia River begins in the Canadian Rockies in southern British Columbia, flows generally in a southerly direction through eastern and central Washington, then turns west and empties into the Pacific Ocean.  The last 300 of its 1,232 miles form the Washington-Oregon boundary.

The Willamette River is 187 miles long and begins in the Coastal and Cascade Ranges of Oregon.  It enters the Columbia River about 101 miles from the ocean after flowing through the City of Portland.

The deep draft navigation channel in the Columbia and Lower Willamette Rivers extends from the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to Vancouver, Washington, approximately 105.5 miles, and up the Willamette River to the Broadway Bridge, a distance of 11.6 miles.
