Joining the Herd, A Handbook on Participating in Manitoba’s Government (pdf) was prepared by Manitoba Ombudsman for use with the Grades 6, 9 and 11 Manitoba Social Studies curriculum. The youth rights pamphlets featured in Section 5 of the handbook were co-produced by the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, Office of the Children’s Advocate and Manitoba Ombudsman.

Grades 6, 9 and 11 were chosen for our student outreach program because of the curriculum content on Canada and Canadian government. For students, the handbook offers what we believe are relevant and engaging learning activities on government and democratic citizenship. For teachers, it includes outlines of applicable skills, learning outcomes and focusing questions related to the curriculum.

To date, the handbook has been distributed to all English language schools with Grades 6, 9 and 11. Additional copies can be obtained in CD or hard copy format from the Manitoba Text Book Bureau, or toll free at 1-866-447-6822 (quote stock #80564).

For more information on Joining the Herd, including arrangements for an “Ask the Ombudsman” presentation in your classroom, contact our Manager, Research and Education at 982-9139 (Winnipeg) or 1-800-665-0531 (toll free in Manitoba).
