Bonneville Lock and Dam Events & Outreach 2008

April 18  SOLV Day: Columbia Gorge students from Dallesport will join us to help clean up and enhance our shorelines. Contact Park Ranger David Weiss at (541) 374-8820 for information.

April 19  SOLV/Bonneville Clean Sweep: Bonneville Lock and Dam is a wonderful site to fish, picnic or just see the sites.  To keep these recreation areas open we need your help to care for them.  Join us to help keep our shorelines clean from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.  For more information contact Park Ranger Claudia Round at (541) 374-8344.

April 19  Earth Day: Come celebrate our great natural resources here in the Northwest.  Programs at Bonneville Lock and Dam will include special talks, films and activities for all ages. 

April 24  Bring Your Child To Work Day.

April 24  Children’s Clean Water Festival: Portland Community College, Sylvania Campus, 1200 SE 49th Avenue, Portland, OR.  This is a one-day festival where students learn about the science, management, resources and biological and ecological importance of water.  Join Bonneville park rangers and learn about the importance of water safety.  Contact Patty Morgan for more information at (503) 223-8633. 

May 17  Down By The Riverside: During this SOLV-sponsored event we encourage the public to help care for and clean up the recreation areas around Bonneville Lock and Dam.  Contact Park Ranger Claudia Round for more information at (541) 374-8344.

May 17-23  Safe Boating Week: Reduce recreational fatalities by learning about safe and responsible boating.  Visit www.safeboatingcouncil.org for the various activities surrounding this event. 

May 22-23  Water Jam: Students in the Columbia River Gorge will spend a day exploring our important water resources. We will learn about the importance of this natural resource and what we can do to take better care of it.  For more information contact Cheri Anderson with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (509)493-2934.

June 8  National Trails Day: National Trails Day has grown to inspire nearly a million trail enthusiasts across the country to flock to their favorite trails to discover, learn about and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects. Come to Bonneville Lock and Dam to learn about significant trails in our region, past and present.

May 31 - June 1  Sturgeon Festival: “A celebration of Columbia River ecosystems.” Various organizations including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers promote stewardship of the Lower Columbia River's resources. Through the intricate life of sturgeon fisheries one becomes aware of ecosystem health and our responsibility to protect the Columbia River waters. The event is held at the Water Resource Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver, WA.

June 7  Passport to Fishing at Bonneville Fish Hatchery: Join the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a host of other groups for this free fishing clinic for kids 12 and under (accompanied by an adult).  Call ODFW at (503) 657-2000 ext. 228 for information.

June 21-22  Family Day in the Gorge at Multnomah Falls: This event provides a great opportunity to take the family to Multnomah Falls and participate in all kinds of fun activities.  Bonneville Lock and Dam rangers will be there leading activities for children of all ages.  Contact Aaron Peterson at (503) 209-1647 for more information.

June 22  Carson Fish Hatchery Open House.

July 23-26  Hood River County Fair: All that a country county fair ought to be! Great 4-H exhibits, live entertainment, carnival rides, great food and gorgeous views!  Park rangers from Bonneville Lock and Dam will partner with U.S. Fish and Wildlife educators to staff a display and activity in the exhibit hall.  The fairgrounds are in Odell, OR.

August 4-8  Columbia Camp for Educators: Educators will have the opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural history of the Columbia River Gorge area while exploring and seeing what resources might help them teach their students.  Educators with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and City of Vancouver lead this week-long institute for all educators.  Call Bev Walker at (360) 696-8478.

August 16  Powerhouse II Power Walk:   Special tours will be presented at the Washington Shore Visitor Center.  Contact Park Ranger Jane Jackson at (503) 374-8820 for more information.

August 13-17  2008 Skamania County Fair and Timber Carnival - The 100th Year: The Skamania County Fair and Timber Carnival is a tradition of people sharing their knowledge and skills for the preservation and promotion of what’s best in America. September 6  Carson National Fish Hatchery, Kids Free Fishing Day, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Carson National Fish Hatchery, 14041 Wind River Highway, Carson, WA.  Learn to fish!  This clinic is for children age 12 and under.  Children will catch their own trout, learn how to cast, play migration golf with a salmon survival theme, and get a first-hand look at a fish hatchery!  Contact Cheri Anderson at (509) 493-2934 for more information. 

September 13  Fall Salmon Festival at Bonneville Lock and Dam: Fall is a great time to visit Bonneville Lock and Dam and view salmon climbing the ladders.  Our Salmon Festival will feature special speakers, activities, and films.  Call the Visitor Center at (541) 374-8820 for more information.

September 20  Spring Creek Fish Hatchery Open House.

September 27  National Public Lands Day: A day to celebrate and care for the incredible resource this country has in its public lands. Please contact the park ranger staff at (541) 374-8344 to learn how you can help participate in taking care of our public lands at Bonneville Lock and Dam.

October 18-19  Salmon Festival at Oxbow Park: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Fish Survival and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Music, displays, Native American Indian Village, Art, food and much more!
