Corrective Action Smart Enforcement Strategy
The Corrective Action Smart Enforcement Strategy (CASES) is targeted at reducing human exposure to hazardous wastes.
The Corrective Action Smart Enforcement Strategy targets hazardous waste facilities with contamination that is potentially harmful to human health.
EPA's goal is to have human exposures controlled at 95% of the facilities identified as high priority for RCRA cleanup by September 30, 2005.
CASES focuses on facilities that may benefit from EPA enforcement efforts.
- facilities that are on track to meet the 2005 deadline are not part of the CASES initiative, and
- facilities that cannot meet the 2005 deadline due to site-specific issues (generally complex technical problems) that are unrelated to compliance are also not part of the initiative.
The elements of Smart Enforcement (PDF) (6 pp, 209 kb, About PDF) are the basis for this strategy. Smart enforcement emphasizes results over process, thereby allowing flexibility in the choice of tools and approaches to achieve the best environmental outcome.
