Capitol Hill/Springfield Anthrax Response
Homeland Security
Direct criminal investigative support was provided to the FBI's lead efforts regarding the Anthrax attacks on the U.S. Capitol complex. Both the National Counter Terrorism Evidence Response Team and the Counter Terrorism Response Team were deployed. These teams provided the following support:
October 2001
- Environmental sampling at the Hart Senate Office Building, in the hot zones on the 5th and 6th floors and several other locations
- Overseeing the removal of suspected contaminated mail from the mail rooms located in:
- Dirksen Building
- Ford Building
- Hart Building
- P Street bulk mail facility at the Capitol Complex
- Removal of suspected contaminated mail from the Longworth Building
November 2001
- Development and construction of a containment facility at a GSA warehouse located in Springfield, Virginia
- Sampling each of the 635 bags of suspected contaminated mail
December 2001
- Sampling and sorting of additional mail from Capitol Hill at the warehouse
In all, 39 Special Agents, 13 technical personnel and three support personnel were involved at one time or another during the response to the Capitol incident.
