  • REI offers “Bicycle Maintenance 101” and “Basic Bike Maintenance for Women” free of charge at several locations. Go to http://www.rei.com/stores/index.jsp to search for a class near you.

  • Want to contribute to trail maintenance and meet others who are interested in keeping hiking trails safe and accessible? Washington Trails Assocation offers volunteer opportunities to work on trails for most fitness levels. This is a great way to get involved. WTA also lists a hiking guide and resources for your trip. Don’t forget the 10 essentials.
  • American Trails lists resources for information and trails in Washington state.

Bike

Bicycle Saturdays and Sundays –On September 13th and September 21st, Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed to vehicles from 10 am to 6 pm making it the perfect, scenic bike route. More info at www.seattle.gov/parks or 206-684-4075

MS Bike Ride - Sept. 13-14. Scenic two-day bike ride through Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties along courses ranging from 50 to 175 miles. For more information: www.nationalmssociety.org or 800-344-4867.

Hike

Issaquah Alps Family Hike - Sept. 21 at 1:00 pm, join the Issaquah Alps Trail Club for a 3 mile hike along the Issaquah Creek hatchery to see salmon spawning. Children 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear and pack a small pack with water and snacks. Meet at the Issaquah Library to carpool. PAWSwalk – Sept. 6th at 8:00 am, Magnuson Park. Walk with your dog then enjoy animal-friendly shopping, demonstrations and a kids zone. Proceeds support PAWS animal rescue. Registration is $25. Info at 425-787-2500 or www.PAWSwalk.net.

Phinney Garden Tour – Sept. 7th from 11 am – 4 pm. Tour 11 neighborhood gardens in the Phinney/Greenwood area. No strollers or pets. $10 - $15 registration fee supports the Phinney Neighborhood Center. Call 206-783-2244 or go to www.phinneycenter.org.

Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks Walking Tour – Sept 13th at 10:00 am, walk Cowen and Ravenna parks. No reservations are required. For more info, call 425-885-3173.

Feet First Central District Walk – September 13th at 10:30 am. Meet at the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic at 2101 E. Yesler Way and tour the clinic, the Pratt Fine Arts Center and the proposed development project at 23rd and Cherry. Everyone on the walk receives a new Feet First Central District map, pedometer and a coupon for 10% off classes at the Pratt Fine Arts Center but you must register. Owl hoot at Camp Long – Sept. 13th at 7:30 pm. Learn about owls and listen for them with guides from Camp Long in West Seattle. For ages 5 and older. $8 per person. Register at least 1 day in advance at 206-684-7434

Port Susan Bay Preserve Tour – Sept. 20th at 9:00 am. The Nature Conservancy leads visitors on guided walking tours at its Port Susan Bay Preserve near Stanwood, which safeguards some of the finest estuarine habitat in the Puget Sound. Call 206-343-4345 or visit www.nature.org/washington
