Fellowship Programs:
Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Department of Family Medicine sponsors the National Capital Consortium-Dewitt Army Community Hospital Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. It is an intensive one-year program that trains military family physicians in the non-surgical care and education of recreational and competitive athletes at all levels of fitness. Students are invited to participate in this training by participating in a fourth year elective.
Residency Teaching Mini-Fellowship
The USU Family Medicine Dept. offers a 4-week Teaching Mini-Fellowship, open competitively to residents in military training programs. Interested applicants should contact Christy Roth for more information (301-295-3632).
- 1. The Department of Family Medicine at the Uniformed Services University is pleased to again offer a PG-3 elective starting in the fall of 2008. The program was very successful over the last 4 years and 12 outstanding residents have completed the rotation at USU.
- 2. Three resident scholars will be selected to participate in an interactive, individualized, multi-component curriculum in Faculty Development. The program is targeted at residents with a demonstrated interest and aptitude for teaching and pursuing an academic Family Medicine career in the military.
- 3. The residents will be competitively selected, (one per branch of service), based on the application package submitted. This package will require: a CV, a personal statement outlining their interest in the elective and teaching in Military Family Medicine, and a brief outline of their proposed scholarly project. A letter from their Residency Director validating the future faculty potential of the scholarship applicant must also be included. The package should be forwarded to breamy@usuhs.mil. After acceptance, the timing of the elective will be coordinated with the resident, USUHS and their Program Director. The deadline for package submission is 30 June 2008 for AY 2008-09.
- 4. Each scholarship will include a funded 4-week TDY to USU to include: travel, lodging on the Bethesda campus and per diem. Rental car is not included. Costs will be administered by the Department of Family Medicine at USU through an endowment fund with the Henry Jackson Foundation. Local command dictates the specific mechanisms to reimburse the individual resident and issuance of travel orders.
- 5. The curriculum of the elective will include several core elements. Some can be customized to the needs of the individual resident. Core elements include:
- CLINIC PRECEPTING
-Precepting with USU faculty at Andrews AFB utilizing several precepting techniques - SMALL GROUP TEACHING
-Small group teaching techniques
-Teaching as a co-facilitator in one of several medical student small groups along with a USU faculty preceptor (HCHC, Clinical Path, ICM I/II, MS-3 core teaching to include Sports Medicine, Geriatrics and Advocacy) - LECTURE SKILLS
-Lecture preparation and delivery to a group
-Targeting lectures at specific audiences - LEARNER ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK
-Training and practice in assessing Learning styles and delivering feedback
-Experience assessing learners and writing educational prescriptions at the USU Simulation Center
-Faculty advisor skills - ACADEMIC PROGRESSION & CAREER DEVELOPMENT
-Readings and development of a career path in academic military family medicine
-Understanding the "alphabet soup" of academic medicine
-Developing an Academic CV
-Developing an Educator's Portfolio - SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY & RESEARCH TRAINING
-Dedicated education and time will be spent to develop a scholarly work (case report & literature review, clinical investigation, curriculum development, or educational research) during the rotation that meets or expands upon individual residency program research requirements.
-How to write a research question/hypothesis and proposal development

Geriatrics Fellowship:
Geriatrics fellowship training is currently available for military family physicians in the Army and Navy. Training in geriatrics is determined on a case-by-case basis and the needs of the service. Training for Army personnel is conducted at the Madigan Army Medical Center-VA Puget Sound Health Care Program in Tacoma, Washington. Navy personnel should contact their specialty leader on fellowship options.
Faculty Development Fellowship:
