How can my child get a Texas Health Steps check-up?

  • If your child needs medical and dental care that Medicaid provides and is not getting that care, visit the Texas Health and Human Services Commission web site about getting your child enrolled in Medicaid.
  • Call your doctor, nurse, dentist, or case manager and ask for a Texas Health Steps checkup for your child.
  • If you need help finding a doctor, nurse, dentist, or case manager, call:

    1-877-THSTEPS (1-877-847-8377)
    (The call is free!)

A Texas Health Steps Outreach Counselor will help you find a provider and answer any questions you may have about the services your child can get. Outreach Counselors are available to talk with you Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • You also may contact the Texas Health Steps Regional Office near where you live by visiting the Regions page of this web site.
  • If you have no way to get to a Texas Health Steps medical or dental appointment, please visit the Medical Transportation web site or call:

    1-877-633-8747
    (The call is free!)

The Medical Transportation Program staff will help you get a ride at no cost to you or will pay one of your friends, relatives, or neighbors to drive you to and from a Texas Health Steps appointment. They also will give you money for gas to get to a medical or dental appointment.

When is the right time for a Texas Health Steps check-up?

  • Check your Medicaid Identification Form (Med ID) each month when it comes in the mail. It shows when your child is due for medical and dental checkups and other screenings.
  • What does it mean if nothing appears under your child's name on the Med ID form? It means it is not time for a checkup, but you can still take your child to doctors, nurses, or dentists if they are sick or in pain and Medicaid will pay for the visit and any medically necessary care.
  • Checkup ages for:
    • Babies and toddlers - 1-2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, and 2, 3, 4, and 5 years.
    • Older children - 6, 8, and 10 years.
    • Preteens, teens, and young adults - 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 years.
