EMS Coordinator Recertification
Initial Coordinator Certification
A course coordinator is an individual
who has the overall responsibility for conducting an EMS training course
under the direction of an approved EMS training program. Course coordinators
may be certified as a basic coordinator or as an advanced coordinator,
but can not coordinate courses above their personnel certification level.
Requirements for initial basic coordinator certification:
Maintain state certification as at least an EMT-basic
Have been a certified EMS instructor for at least two consecutive years
Have documented at least 120 hours of instruction for initial EMS certificants
or have successfully conducted an EMT-basic course
Submit documentation of positive evaluations as a certified instructor
Provide evidence of affiliation and operate under the supervision of
a licensed provider, an EMS medical director, a teaching hospital, a
regionally accredited post-secondary educational institution and/or
a health care institution accredited by an organization recognized by
DSHS
Submit letters of intent from qualified providers of clinical and field
internship experience
Successfully complete a DSHS-sponsored course coordinator training course
Submit INITIAL EMS coordinator, instructor and information operator
instructor certification application and fee,
if applicable, to the Texas Dept of State Health Services. Mailing
address on the application form.
Pass state written examination within one year of course completion

Requirements for initial advanced coordinator certification:
Maintain state certification as at least an EMT-Intermediate or paramedic
Have an associate degree, a bachelor degree or an advanced degree
Have been a certified EMS instructor for at least four consecutive years
or as a basic coordinator for two consecutive years
Have documented at least 120 hours of instruction for initial EMS certificants
Submit documentation of positive evaluations as a certified instructor
or as a basic coordinator
Provide evidence of affiliation and operate under the supervision of
a regionally accredited post-secondary educational institution, a health
care institution accredited by an organization recognized by DSHS, or
another entity approved by the department to sponsor an advanced training
program
Submit letters of intent from qualified providers of clinical and field
internship experience
Successfully complete a DSHS-sponsored course coordinator training course*
Submit INITIAL EMS Coordinator, instructor and information operator
instructor certification application and fee,
if applicable, to the Texas Dept of State Health Services. Mailing
address on application form.
Pass state written examination within one year of course completion*

*Candidates who hold current basic coordinator certification and are
applying for advanced coordinator certification do not have to take the
coordinator training course and exam.

EMS coordinator renewal is available

To become eligible for recertification, you must meet the following requirements
during the latest instructor certification period.
Maintain active status EMS personnel certification
Attend regional updates as required by the department
Maintain association with appropriate level program
Maintain affiliation with clinical and field internship experience entities
Submit RENEWAL EMS coordinator, instructor and information operator
instructor certification application and fee
to: Texas Department of State Health Services, Attn: Mail Code 2003 ,
Austin, TX 78756-3199
Renewal on a late basis is allowable up to one year after expiration
date. See application for penalty fees.
