Annual competitions among faculty are held for a variety of grant types:
- Research Initiation Grant (RIG): Funds the initiation of research by junior faculty.

- Research Opportunity Program (ROP) Grant: Provides seed-money to develop pilot-data and/or to conduct preliminary research that will eventually lead to large extramural grant proposals.

Special Funding
Investigators occasionally need to make requests for research-related funding that are not associated with a grant proposal and do not fall within one of the normal funding mechanisms of the OVPRED. Refer to the Procedure for Approval of Special Requests for Funding section of the Cost-Sharing procedure document for information on intramural funding support.
New Procedure for Requests for Special Funding
UNT Research and Creativity Enhancement (RCE) awardThe UNT Research and Creativity Enhancement (RCE) award supports selected tenured faculty in the liberal arts and fine arts to enhance their research, scholarly, and/or creative endeavors.
To be eligible for RCE competition, the applicant must be a full-time, tenured faculty member of the University of North Texas with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor whose scholarly discipline is in the arts or humanities.
The deadline for the next competition is no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 in the Hurley Administration Building, Room 175.
Junior Faculty Summer Research Fellowship
Partial summer salary support for faculty early in their academic careers to enable them to concentrate on research activities during summer months.
Open only to Junior Faculty in their first three years. Deadline is no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. Note: has new guidelines and application changes

Pursuit of Extramural Support Travel (PEST) Program
Assists researchers with travel to funding agencies.
Provides funds to bring program officers or other funding agency personnel to UNT.

Provides stop-gap funding for unexpected and emergency needs outside of regular funding cycles.

Joint UAEM-UNT Research Seed Funding Program
UNT and the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM) are establishing the UAEM-UNT Research Seed Funding Program. This program will support joint research projects that strengthen the close academic relationship between the two institutions and enhance the research training of graduate students.

UNT-UNTHSC Joint Institutional Seed Research Program
The goal of this periodic intramural grant is to foster collaborative, innovative research conducted jointly by University of North Texas (UNT) and University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) faculty. The purpose of these awards is to enhance opportunities for securing external research funding, particularly from Federal Agencies.
