Introduction

The Department of Studio Art offers the BFA degree with a major in studio art and concentrations in ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, new media art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor. Students interested in these degrees may contact the department chair.

Studio classrooms are open to students most evenings and weekends for completion of required class work. Students must provide their own art supplies.

Mission/Vision Statement

The mission of the Department of Studio Art is to promote excellence in the visual arts through a comprehensive educational program in its nine disciplines: ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, new media art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor. We transmit our artistic heritage, lay a solid foundation of basic skills and concepts, foster critical thinking, and inspire creativity so that each student may find his or her own aesthetic voice.

Entering Students

Entering students interested in majoring in the College of Visual Arts and Design will initially be advised by the office of Student Services. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the major. It is strongly recommended that students not attempt advanced art program courses before being admitted to the major. For full details see an academic advisor in the Art building, Room 111.

Portfolio Reviews

Each concentration has a review system. Some concentrations require an entry-level portfolio review and a mid-point portfolio review, which the student must pass to continue in the concentration. All concentrations require that seniors pass an exit review and/or a capstone course prior to graduation. It is the students’ responsibility to familiarize themselves with all requirements for their concentration. Further information regarding the review system for each concentration is available from the College of Visual Arts and Design Student Services Office in the Art Building, Room 111. Upon request, advising staff will provide students with a curriculum sheet that specifies degree requirements and outlines the procedure for required review(s) in their concentration.

Students who do not pass one or another of the successive required reviews should consult with their faculty advisor and/or the department chairperson regarding further options.

Students are responsible for notifying faculty that they need to participate in the exit review. A faculty advisor in the student’s major should be contacted at the beginning of the student’s last fall or spring term/semester prior to graduation. Exit reviews are conducted only in fall and spring terms/semesters. Students who anticipate summer graduation must have their work reviewed during the previous spring term.

Note: Students should contact a faculty advisor in their major for specific expectations and procedures for all portfolio reviews.

Programs of Study

The Department of Studio Art offers the following degrees:

Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in studio art and concentrations in ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, new media art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor; and
Master of Fine Arts with a major in studio art and concentrations in ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

General Degree Requirements

Candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in studio art will meet the following requirements:

1. Hours Required and General/College Requirements: A minimum of 120 total semester hours of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as specified in the “General University Requirements” in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Visual Arts and Design requirements.

2. Major Requirements: Completion of at least 78 hours of art to include a minimum of 18 hours in a prescribed field and 24 hours of art core (required for all studio majors): ART 1200, 1440, 1450, 1500, 1510, 2350, and 2360; ASTU 2200; specific additional requirements for each concentration are listed below:

Ceramics

ASTU 2050, 3050; 15 hours of ASTU 4050; 6 hours (3 advanced) from a second craft field; 3 hours from a third craft field; 6 advanced hours of art history; 18 hours (15 advanced) of art electives.

Drawing and Painting

ASTU 2210, 2215, 3200, 3210, 4210, 4215; AEAH 4812 and 4813; 3 hours from ASTU 2050, 2130, 2150 or 2350; 3 hours from ASTU 3210, 3220 or 3230; 3 hours from ASTU 3310, 3320, 3330 or 3340; 6 hours from ASTU 4210, 4215, 4220 or 4230; and 15 hours (9 advanced) of art electives. Midpoint review administered after ASTU 2215; 6 hours of ASTU 3210 and 6 hours of ASTU 4210 may be applied toward major; other repeatable courses count toward the major only once. Exit review conducted during student’s final enrollment in 4000-level painting course.

Fibers

ASTU 2120, 2130, 2417, 3120, 3130 and 3135; 6 hours (3 advanced) from a second craft; 15 hours of ASTU 4120 or 4130; 6 hours of advanced art history; 9 hours of advanced art electives.

Metalsmithing and Jewelry

ASTU 2150, 3150, 3160; 12 hours of ASTU 4150; 6 hours (3 advanced) from a second craft; 3 hours from a third craft; 6 advanced hours of art history; 18 hours (15 advanced) of art electives.

New Media Art

ART 3170; AEAH 4813, 4814; ASTU 2450, 2460, 3450, 3460; 6 hours of ASTU 4450; 6 hours of ASTU 4460; 6 hours from ADES 1500, 1550, 1625, ASTU 2150, 2210, 2215, 2250, 2255, 2350, 2417, 3150, 3200, 3310, 3320, 3330, 3340 or 3350; AEAH 4812 or 4842; 15 hours from ART 4120, 4175, ASTU 2150, 2250, 2255, 2302, 2350, 3150, 3230, 3310, 3320, 3330, 3340, 3350, 4260, AEAH 4812, 4842, 4843 (or 12 hours from the preceding list and 3 hours from MUCP 4500, 4595, 4670, 4680 or MUET 3030).

Photography

ART 3170; ASTU 2250, 2255, 2350; ASTU 2210 or 2417; selection through entry review process; ASTU 3250; selection into the photography program through the mid-point review process; 3 hours from ASTU 3310, 3320, 3330 or 3340; AEAH 4843; ASTU 4260, 4270; 6 hours of ASTU 4250; 3 advanced hours of art history; 3 hours from ASTU 4280 or 4290; and 12 hours (9 advanced) of art electives.

Printmaking

ASTU 2210, 2250, 2417, 3200; AEAH 4813, 4844; 15 hours from ASTU 3310, 3320, 3330, 3340, 4305, 4310, 4320, 4330 or 4340; 6 hours of ASTU 4300; 15 hours of art electives (12 of which must be advanced).

Sculpture

ASTU 2350, 3200, 3350; AEAH 4814; 6 hours from ceramics, metalsmithing/jewelry or fibers; 12 hours of ASTU 4350; 6 advanced hours of art history; 18 hours (15 advanced) of art electives.

Watercolor

ASTU 2210, 2417, 3200, 3417, 3427, 3437; 6 hours from AEAH 4808, 4810 or 4823; 3 hours from ASTU 2050, 2120, 2150 or 2350; 3 hours from ASTU 3310, 3320, 3330 or 3340; 9 hours of ASTU 4417;15 hours of art electives (9 hours of which must be advanced). Midpoint review administered during enrollment in ASTU 3427. Exit review conducted during student’s final enrollment in ASTU 4417.

3. Minor Requirements: No minor is required.

4. Electives: Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum Requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. For specific information see an academic advisor in the College of Visual Arts and Design Student Services Office, Art Building, Room 111.

5. Other Requirements:

24 advanced hours must be completed at UNT.
36 hours of art (including at least 12 advanced hours) must be completed at UNT.
Transfer course work substituted for required UNT art courses must be approved by a student’s faculty advisor during the degree audit process.
A 2.5 grade point average must be maintained in all art courses; only a grade of C (2.0) or better in art courses will count toward degree requirements.

Minor in Studio Art

A minor in studio art consists of at least 18 hours, including at least 6 advanced hours. At least 9 hours must be completed at UNT.

Minor in Ceramics

ART 1440, 1450; ASTU 2050, 3050 and 4050 (6 hours).

Minor in Fibers

ART 1440, 1450; ASTU 2120 or 2130, ASTU 3120 or 3130, and ASTU 4120 (6 hours) or 4130 (6 hours).

Minor in Metalsmithing and Jewelry

ART 1440, 1450; ASTU 2150, 3150, 3160 and 4150.

Minor in Photography

ART 1440, 1450; ASTU 2250, 2255 (must pass portfolio review before proceeding), 3250; and AEAH 4843.

Minor in Printmaking

ART 1440, 1450, 1500, 1510; 6 hours from ASTU 3310, 3320, 3330 or 3340.

Minor in Sculpture

ART 1440, 1450, 1500; ASTU 2350, 3350 and 4350. Additional prerequisites do not apply to sculpture minors.

Graduate Degrees

The department offers a degree program leading to the Master of Fine Arts with a major in studio art and concentrations in ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and watercolor. For complete information, consult the Graduate Catalog.
