Why Choose Materials Science and Engineering at UNT?

Materials Science and Engineering bridges disciplines of applied physics, chemistry, and engineering. The science of materials helps the student to understand the fundamental structure property relations in materials while the engineering of materials enables the student to learn how to process materials and determine the properties of the finished product.

The Materials Science and Engineering Department celebrates it’s 10 year anniversary this year. The graduate program has graduated over 40 students with Masters and Ph.D. degrees.

The department currently occupies ~25,000 ft2 in the UNT Discovery Park, with ~40,000 ft2 of unfinished space in which to expand.  Having one of the most advanced analytical characterization facilities in the country, both undergraduate and graduate students receive training on state-of-the-art equipment. 

The department has strong connections with local industries and is setting up relationships for coops and internships so that students can receive practical training as well as classroom instruction.   Students who graduate with a bachelor of science degree in materials science and engineering can expect a very healthy job market and relatively high staring salaries in a whole variety of industries.  In fact, MSE BS graduates are heavily sought after by industries of all types including:  automotive, chemical, aerospace, microelectronics, magnetic storage, transportation, sports, defense, forensics, manufacturing, etc.  A BS degree in MSE also prepares students for continuing their education with a masters or a PhD degree in either MSE or a related field.

The graduate program has been established since 1996. To date we have graduated over 40 students. Our students are employed at Raytheon, Texas Instruments, Lockheed Martin, Lexmark, Solvay Engineered Polymers, GE Plastics, Bell Hellicopter Textron, and many small businesses. We have also graduated small business owners.

The alumni base is strong and mentors are available to undergraduates. Active student chapters of the Materials Research Society and Society of Plastics Engineers host monthly pizza parties and invite alumni and engineers in the industry. Issues such as communication, leadership, preparing to work in the industry, and life in the academia are addressed in these informal settings.
