Please review the topics below regarding important general information regarding policies, guidelines and procedures of both the College of Business Administration and the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.
The following is a list of topics that are covered in this section:
12 Hour Rules
- Department Policy - No more than 12 hours of course work may be transferred from any concentration/major to another concentration/major within the College of Business. For purposes of this rule, the first 12 hours completed are applied toward the program.
- College of Business Administration Policy - Students may not register for more than 12 hours of 5XXX level courses while classified as a GNDE student.
- University Policy - Up to 12 hours of graduate level course work taken as a GNDE student may be used toward a degree.
Change of Major
- GNDE students must fill out a Change of Major form and be officially admitted to a program before taking more than 12 hours.
- Anyone listed as MBA Undecided must also complete a Change of Major form to be admitted into a degree program.
- Forms may be picked up in TSGS or the Graduate Programs Office in the College of Business Administration or online.
- Turn in the completed form to the TSGS in the Eagle Student Services Center (ESSC).
- Change of majors will not be processed if the graduate GPA is below a 3.0.
Concurrent Enrollment
- Approval to take background courses at another institution and here must first be approved by the Graduate Programs Office and then TSGS.
- Approval to take core and/or concentration courses at another institution and here must first be approved by the departmental advisor, Graduate Programs Office, and then TSGS.
- If approved, official transcripts must be submitted to TSGS upon completion of the courses. A copy will be forwarded to the Graduate Programs Office.
Core and/or Concentration
- MBA degrees require 18 hours of core courses.
- The capstone course, BUSI 5190 must be taken the final semester. Students may request from their departmental advisor approval to take this course one semester early if there is a scheduling conflict.
- MBA degrees require 18 hours of concentration courses (12 fields). These courses are chosen in consultation with the departmental advisor.
- MS degrees require 30 to 36 hours of concentration courses (six majors) and are chosen in consultation with the departmental advisor.
- MS degrees have a capstone course specific to that major and must be taken the final semester, or one semester early if approved by departmental advisor.
Deadlines
- Students are responsible for knowing specific deadlines.
- Check the Schedule of Classes, Graduate Catalog, our website at http://www.coba.unt.edu or the bulletin board outside of the Graduate Programs Office.

Degree Plans
- Must be filed the first semester after admission to a program.
- See departmental advisor to initiate the degree plan process.
- Once the degree plan has been approved by TSGS, a copy will be mailed to the student and the departmental advisor.
- An official copy of the degree plan will be kept in the Graduate Programs Office.
GMAT/GRE Information
- GMAT scores no more than ten (10) years old are required for admission purposes. No more than seven (7) years old for the MS Accounting program.
- GRE scores will be considered if the applicant takes this test prior to applying.
- Appropriate test scores are but one consideration used in determining admission.
- It generally takes 2-3 weeks for official scores to be sent to TSGS.
- Testing is available locally in Dallas or Hurst. Call 1.800.717.GMAT to find a location nearest you and schedule a convenient time to take the test.
Graduate Non-degree (GNDE) Students
- Submit application materials as specified in Admissions section.
- Schedule an appointment with the Graduate Programs Office and bring all transcripts.
- Once transcripts are evaluated, an advising clearance form will be filled out. International students may pursue this option only with certain visas.
- Requires a 2.8 overall GPA or 3.0 on last 60 hours GPA.
- Specific courses are assigned; no more than12 hours of 5XXX level courses may be taken.
- A registration block will be cleared once the student has been officially admitted to UNT.
- Students have to call each semester to have the registration block removed.
Graduation
- Graduation packets may be picked up in the TSGS (Eagle Student Services Center, Room 354). Packets are also available at the Registrar's After Hours Desk M-TH, 5:00 - 7:00pm.
- Graduation applications are due by a specific deadline each semester. See schedule or Graduate Catalog for dates.
- The student is responsible for filing the appropriate graduation application in the TSGS office.
- An updated copy of the degree plan must be turned in with the graduation application and may be obtained from the Graduate Programs Office.
Probation/Suspension
- Students are required to maintain a 3.0 graduate GPA.
- Students will be placed on probation if the GPA falls below 3.0, and a registration block will be implemented.
- Students on probation may NOT participate in early registration.
- Students must receive advising from their departmental advisor before registering.
- Raising the GPA to the required minimum will remove the probation status.
- Students will remain on probation and be allowed to continue taking courses as long as they achieve a 3.0 during a semester even if their cumulative GPA is still below 3.0.
- Students already on probation will be placed on academic suspension for one semester if the GPA in a successive semester falls below 3.0.
- A second suspension will result in withdrawal from the program. A student may reapply after three years.
Retention
- Students may not graduate with more than two C's in their core and/or concentration courses.
- If three C's have been earned, at least one course must be duplicated with a grade of B or better.
- Duplication forms should be completed and turned in at the Registrar's Office.
- If a student receives two course grades below C (for purposes of this rule, the first grade received in a course is always used), the student will be withdrawn from the program.
Special Problems Courses (5900/5910 Courses)
- Credit will not be given for 4XXX level courses unless taken under a 5900 designation. (effective Fall 2002)
- A maximum of 6 to 9 hours may be credited, with no more than 6 hours of 5910 courses.
- Students should obtain approval from their departmental advisor to take a 5900/5910 course for it to apply toward their degree.
- A Special Problems form may be obtained from the Graduate Programs Office (BA 229), or from one of the COBA departments before registration.
- Once completed and signed, the student is to bring the form to the Graduate Programs Office, to meet with an advisor and to obtain a permission number. This must be done before or during registration.
- After the 12th class day, a course will not be changed to a 5900/5910 designation.
Student Responsibility
It is the responsibility of each student to know and follow the policies as detailed in this section. More comprehensive information regarding these or other University policies may be found in the current University of North Texas Graduate Catalog. Either the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies or a COBA Graduate Academic Advisor will be happy to answer additional questions.
TopSubstitutions
- Students are responsible for discussing any degree plan substitutions with the departmental advisor.
- Substitutions are to be approved prior to taking a course that is not on the degree plan.
- Departmental advisors will forward the substitution to the Graduate Programs Office.
- The Graduate School will be notified of the substitution.
Transcript Evaluation (for background courses)
- Prospective students may schedule an appointment with the Graduate Programs Office for a preliminary evaluation. Students should bring a copy of all transcripts.
- Students that have applied will automatically receive an evaluation of their transcripts after the application has been processed.
- GNDE students may schedule an appointment with the Graduate Programs Office. See GNDE section.
- Students may submit a course description or syllabus to the Graduate Programs Office for consideration in waiving additional background courses.
- This information should be submitted prior to the 12th class day (5th class day for the summer sessions) or tuition refunds will not be recommended.
- Background courses must be completed first.
Transfer Hours
- Six to nine hours of transfer work may be applied to a degree plan with departmental advisor approval.
- Official transcripts listing these hours must be on file with TSGS.
- Course descriptions must be submitted to the departmental advisor for review.
- If the course is approved for credit, the departmental advisor will contact the Graduate Programs Office to have the course added to the degree plan.
