Steps to teacher certification Post Baccalaureate

Step 1.  Apply to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies

1.If you are not a Master's Degree seeking student, check "Certification Only" on your application.
2. Admission into the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies does not guarentee admission into any teacher certification or graduate program.

Step 2.  Apply to your certification program

1.Contact the department and program of your desired certification area for admission requirements, including GPA and TASP/THEA/GRE test scores or acceptable subsitutions. NOTE: If you started an educator certification program elsewhere in Texas, you must complete this Certification Transfer form before you can be admitted.        
2.

School Librarian, School Counselor, & Educational Diagnostician students need to complete the Standard Professional Certification Plan Fact Sheet and submit the form to the Student Advising Office along with:

  • $25.00 money order (non refundable processing fee). No personal checks.
  • Official transcripts of any COUN, EDSP, or SLIS transfer work that will count toward your certification requirements. 
  • A teacher service record demonstrating 2 years of experience as a classroom teacher.  (If you have many years at multiple districts, send one record that demonstrates 2 years worth of experience).  
  • A copy of your Master's degree plan or certification plan worksheet from your program/department (This does not apply to students who have taken SLIS 5001.  These worksheets are already on file in our office). 
3.Check with your program to ensure that all materials have been sent to the Student Advising Office for the processing of your certification plan. The certification plan process will take approximately 4-6 weeks, possibly longer during high volume periods.  Incomplete files will be returned to the student by mail.

*Students seeking Professional or Supplemental Certification must complete a Masters Degree and provide a Teacher Service Record with two years teaching experience in an accredited public school.

Step 3.   You can do any of the following for advising
1.  Contact the department and program for your area of certification.
2. After you have received your certification plan, you may contact Amy Tannehill, Post Baccalaureate Certification advisor, in the College of Education Student Advising Office, by making an appointment or sending questions via email.

Step 4. Recommendation for Certification

1.After passing your exams, you must apply online through the State Board for Educator Certification in order to be recommended for teacher certification. UNT will be notified when your application and payment is received.             
2.Only students completing a Masters degree in conjuction with their certification need to file a (graduation) degree application during the application period for the semester in which they wish to graduate.  Applications are obtained from the Graduate school. Application deadlines are posted in the catalog, schedule of classes, and Registrar's website.
3.When ALL CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS are completed and your degree has posted onto your transcript, UNT will recommend you for certification.  Students do NOT need to contact UNT in order to be recommended, however, it may take 4-6 weeks for degrees to be posted onto student transcripts.
