Since September 1, 2001, Texas Legislation (House Bill 1403) has allowed schools in the state of Texas the opportunity to award certain state and/or institutional financial aid to assist students pursuing an undergraduate degree if they met the state's criteria for Texas Residency. New legislation enacted effective Fall 2006 (Senate Bill 1528) expands the option for residency to other students, too (not just international students). For the Fall 2006/Spring 2007 award period, the University of North Texas will accept the paper Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for Federal Student Aid (TASFA) application to consider eligible new and continuing students for state and/or institutional financial aid.
The 2007-2008 General Academic Scholarship Application is now available. Deadline to submit is March 1, 2007.
For graduating students or any student withdrawing or dropping below half-time enrollment who have had Stafford loans, please complete exit counseling.
Anticipated Aid is: (1) Scholarships the student has been awarded, and/or (2) financial aid the student has "Accepted" on my UNT. Anticipated aid does NOT include Work Study and Parent Loans. If the total of your Anticipated Aid does not cover your full balance, payment for the difference must be made on your student account to prevent your classes from being dropped. These payments can be made online on MyUNT.
Note: Simply completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will no longer prevent classes from being dropped for non-payment.
Two new federal grant programs (the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant have been created by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005. These two grants will be awarded to the neediest students as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We are working with the Department of Education to resolve the technical issues that accompany the expansion of these programs. We anticipate resolution to occur by late September. Additional information will be forthcoming. Please click here and continue to check our web site for general requirements for these two new grant programs.
The Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (also known as the Deficit Reduction Act) will allow graduate and professional students to borrow under the Federal PLUS loan program beginning with the 2006-2007 aid year. The UNT Student Financial Aid and Scholarships office will provide updates as they become available. We are working with the Department of Education, lenders, software partners, and guarantee agencies to resolve the technical issues that accompany the expansion of this program. However, many of these issues cannot be resolved until late summer. It is estimated that Grad PLUS disbursements will not arrive until early October, approximately 1 month after Federal Stafford loan disbursements. We expect few students to qualify for the Grad PLUS loan. The graduate students most likely to qualify are non-resident students and those who have reached lifetime or annual aggregates of their Federal Stafford loan limits. Please click here for general requirements for the Grad PLUS loan.
