General Student Events

The UNT Health Science Center campus is usually alive with activities, special lunches and events held by and for students. There are many opportunities for students to get involved, and many activities to provide a pleasant break from the strenuous schedules of our students. A number of institution-wide events are held annually to recognize and honor our students. They include:

New Student Orientation Week — Each fall all new students are welcomed into the health science center community with a week of activities designed to introduce them to their new institution. Orientation sessions include presentations by health science center administrators, advice on academics from Student Affairs personnel and from students, and numerous social events. At this time, new students also receive their white coats, have student identification badges made and complete required forms.

Annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony — A formal ceremony held at academic medical centers around the country, whereby new health professions students are ÒcoatedÓ into the health professions by the faculty. The ceremony includes a welcome by the Health Science Center President and an address by a keynote speaker. A reception follows.

Family Day (TCOM) — This Saturday morning event following Orientation Week offers information and advice to the families of new medical students. Included is an overview of osteopathic medicine and an open panel discussion with a student, faculty member and studentÕs spouse. A luncheon and campus tour are included.

Fall Registration — Times vary for medical school and graduate school. See Academic Calendar for specific schedules.

Ranchland — An all-campus party, held on a Friday evening shortly following Orientation Week. Includes dinner, swimming, games, live music and a softball tournament of faculty, students and alumni.

Holiday Dinner Dance — An all-campus semi-formal event. Internship/Residency Fair - Representatives from hospitals and health organizations visit the health science center to recruit students for their internship and residency programs. Other exhibitors include companies offering equipment and services to the medical profession.

Spring Fling — An all-day outdoor event featuring a catered lunch and games at the Founders' Activity Center, for students and their families.

Research Appreciation Day — Each spring, students and faculty display their research projects for the campus community, pharmaceutical and biotechnology company representatives and the local news media. Includes a poster session and oral presentation contests for students.

Honors Day — Held in the spring, Honors Day recognizes medical students who have excelled academically, as well as those who have made outstanding contributions to the institution, the community and the medical and scientific professions.

Graduate Student Awards Banquet — Recognizes graduate students who have excelled academically, as well as those who have made outstanding contributions to the institution and the community.

Senior Recognition Program — Semi-formal event for seniors held in May before commencement. Awards and cash scholarships presented.

Commencement - Third Saturday in May at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Reception following for graduates and their guests.
