Scores of celebrities from Justin Bieber to Tom Cruise have taken part the Ice Bucket Challenge, but when John Humphrys was nominated by his daughter, he gave it the cold-shoulder. The BBC Radio 4 Today presenter has said he’ll happily give money to charity, but is wary of fads. Writing in Waitrose Weekend magazine, Humphrys said: “As someone who set up his own modest charity a few years ago, I have mixed feelings about persuading people to support a charity through stunts.” All seems a bit po-faced, until he continues: “Is it too sanctimonious to say that chairty should be about giving because it’s a worthwhile cause that we really want to help?” He then turns his fire on people collecting for a cause by doing something quite enjoyable for sponsor money. “Still, it’s preferable to all those appeals from people who ask for your help for something they’re madly keen to do anyway.”
