Education & Training
Internship and Fellowship Opportunities
CDC’s Arthritis Program collaborates with organizations such as the
Association for Prevention Teaching and
Research (APTR),*
the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH)*
and also works with the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS)
to offer public health training opportunities that focus on defining the
impact and reducing the burden of arthritis.
Fellowship Opportunities
- A 1- to 2-year APTR fellowship is regularly offered in the Arthritis
Program for a summer or fall start. Refer to the Association for
Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR)* Web site
for fellowship training availability and instructions. Applications are
typically due in April.
- CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS)
fellowship is a two year program in applied epidemiology (our medical
detectives). The Arthritis Program offers a position every year,
providing accepted EIS applicants and opportunity to match with our
program. Refer to the
EIS Web site for availability and instructions. Applications are
typically due in mid-September for a July start.
Online Training
The CDC collaborated with the
Directors of Health Promotion and Education* (DHPE) and the
Arthritis Foundation* (AF) to develop two online educational programs
designed to increase knowledge about arthritis and its associated public
health challenges. Direct links to the courses listed below cannot be

Satellite Broadcasts
In collaboration with the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE),
the CDC Arthritis Program offers satellite broadcasts to enhance the
skills of state arthritis coordinators, Arthritis Foundation staff,
community partners, and other professionals by providing information on
arthritis and public health practice.
- The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program: Adoption Experiences
From the Field, January 9, 2007
This broadcast was specifically
designed to inform program decision makers about the supporting science,
benefits and implementation essentials of the Chronic Disease
Self-Management Program. CDSMP is a cost effective self-management
education program that allows organizations to provide self-management
support across multiple diseases and conditions. The broadcast presents
the important issues for those considering adopting the program. This
broadcast contains a presentation and interview with Kate Lorig, Dr.P.H.,
R.N., developer of the CDSMP, and a panel discussion among public health
professionals who implement the program in a variety of settings.

- Enhancing Fitness with EnhanceFitness: An Evidence-Based
Intervention for Older Adults and People With Chronic Disease, January
26th, 2006.
This conference provides information about EnhanceFitness an
evidence-based, community-delivered exercise program for older adults.
The broadcast was designed to offer potential disseminators critical
background on the intervention and its implementation. This broadcast
features a presentation by Susan Snyder, Director of Project Enhance and
a panel discussion with an EnhanceFitness Instructor and Site
Coordinator addressing program implementation.

- Building Cross-Cultural Partnerships in Public Health
Satellite Conference, June 22, 2005.
This conference provides information about becoming competent and
confident in building partnerships across cultures. This broadcast
features William Guillory, PhD, an expert in cultural competency and
diversity. Dr. Guillory defines cultural competency and
identifies specific dimensions of cultural competency that are likely
to affect cross-cultural partnerships. Handout materials include
a personal assessment of cultural competency and tips for working with
specific minority groups.

Implementing Self-Management Education: Successes
& Challenges in Arthritis Satellite Conference, Tuesday, April 20, 2004.
This satellite conference provides information regarding the
successful implementation of the Arthritis Self-Help Course (ASHC),
including a discussion of the scientific basis, marketing strategies, and
evaluation. This broadcast contains an interview with Kate Lorig, Dr.P.H.,
R.N., developer of the Arthritis Self Help Course, and a panel discussion
among public health professionals who implement ASHC.
