Congresswoman Bordallo Expresses Condolences to Newby Family

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—January 5, 2007Washington, D.C. –

Upon hearing of the passing of teenager Jeromy Paul Castro Newby today, Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo issued the following statement:

“I join the Newby family, Jeromy’s friends and classmates, and all people of Guam in mourning his death. What happened to Jeremy is a tragedy that has shocked and saddened all of us. School is supposed to be a place of safety and security as well as learning for our children and young people. And classmates and schoolmates are not supposed to be people to fear. Sadly, Jeremy’s case has shaken these long-held beliefs.

“Now that we have joined the growing list of states that have been plunged into sorrow because of school violence, we also join the thousands of parents, teachers and administrators who are crying out for effective ways to identify and assist troubled youth and prevent such tragedies in our schools.

I assure the Newby family and the people of Guam that I will support any efforts in Congress to protect our children and to make our schools safe places again.”
