Bordallo Visits with Guam National Guard Personnel in Washington, D.C.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—June 27, 2006—Washington, D.C.—

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo met today with servicemembers from the Guam National Guard as part of a briefing with the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS).

"It is always a pleasure to visit with service men and women from our island and show support for the National Guard.  The service of our Guard personnel is instrumental in the global war on terror," Bordallo stated.  "These men and women make our island and our country proud and we will forever owe them a debt of gratitude for what they do to defend us abroad, to support us in recovering from natural disasters, and to secure our homeland.  Today I had the opportunity to hear directly from them in Washington, D.C. about the issues important to them and to their units."

As part of today's briefing, Congresswoman Bordallo had lunch with the Guam National Guard soldiers and participated in a question and answer session, discussing multiple topics.  Congresswoman Bordallo touched upon recent developments in National Guard Military Construction funding and projects on Guam, as well as National Guard missions and deployments.

Bordallo also discussed recent developments affecting the Guam Air National Guard, including the establishment of a "Red Horse" civil engineering unit in the Guam Air National Guard.  Part of the question and answer session focused on Congressional efforts to expand benefits to National Guard personnel, including expanding TRICARE eligibility for the Guard and Reserve, reducing the age at which reserve retirees would receive retirement pay, recruiting and retention bonuses, and establishing the Chief of the National Guard Bureau (NGB) as a Four Star General and giving him a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
