A City Two Months Old: Nome City, Alaska
Local pride and boosterism are conveyed through the titles of some city views. For example, this panorama of Nome City, Alaska, taken September 21, 1899 is entitled, "A City Two Months Old." Many tents line the waterfront, and beyond the tents are several buildings still under construction.
This photograph of Nome City, taken one day later on Main Street, also shows signs of growth in the young city. The sidewalks have been covered with wooden planks to reduce the amount of dirt tracked into nearby businesses. Businesses along the street include a saloon, bakery, dentist's office, attorney's office, and accommodations for lodging. Men, dressed in everything from business suits and bow ties to old work clothes, crowd Main Street and its sidewalks.
