Each
year the Sanctuary partners with other organizations to coordinate and
host several workshops for teachers and marine educators. These workshops
are single-day to multi-day professional development opportunities. During
these workshops, teachers learn the importance and value of the sanctuary
and learn strategies for integrating ocean studies into all disciplines,
participate in field investigations, interact with the research community,
learn scientific monitoring techniques, develop lesson plans and refine
presentation skills. CINMS also conducts teacher workshops at local, regional
and national professional conferences each year.

Mapping
an Ocean Sanctuary
The Sanctuary and Center for Image Processing in Education
(CIPE) have
partnered to develop a GIS(Geographic Information Systems)
marine science curriculum and middle and high school teacher
training program. GIS is a valuable visualization tool used
by marine resource managers to map locations of animals and
to understand ocean bathymetry, currents, sea surface temperature
and more. The Mapping an Ocean Sanctuary curriculum will be
used as part of the new National Science Foundation Ocean
Explorers project. Ocean Explorers will include training for
teachers on how to use Arcview software to explore maps and
databases showing biological, geological and economic features
of the sanctuary. Some specific topics include environmental
monitoring, distribution of mairne species, marine reserves,
and commercial and recrational use patterns in the sanctuary.

LiMPETS
(Long-term
Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students) workshop
The Sanctuary is seeking dedicated teachers that want to engage
their
students in long-term field monitoring studies to participate
in this LiMPETs program. Teacher worksops include an introduction
to rocky intertidal, sandy beach and offshore monitoring techniques
with invited guest speakers, a field trip to rocky intertidal
and sandy beach sites to collect data, instruction for entering
data into an online database, and guidance for setting up your
own marine monitoring program with your students. For more information

UCSB
MSI Oceans to Classrooms:
The
Sanctuary education staff is working collaboratively with researchers
and educators from the University of California, Santa Barbara
Marine Science Institute and area teachers on developing kits
and lesson materials for bringing ocean sciences into the classrooms.
There is a floating laboratory component that includes stations
for collecting water chemistry, plankton data, marine mammal
sightings and learning about marine navigation. To find out
more about the Oceans
to Classrooms Program click here

Mountains
to the Sea Watershed Curriculum
The Sanctuary partnered with Project
Clean Water in the development of a comprehensive watershed
education program for 4th through 8th grade that introduces
both teachers and students to our local watershed by studying
the journey of water from up in the nountains all the way down
to the sea. The curriculum, in-class presentations, field trips
and resources cover a variety of topics including the water
cycle, runoff and the connection between our local creeks and
the ocean. A variety of handouts, posters and experiments are
also included. Click
here for more information.
Project
Oceanography Channel Islands Curriculum
CINMS worked with Project Oceanography
during the winter of 2002 to create three live educational television
programs and educational activity packets for 6th - 8th grades
highlighting research in the sanctuary, intertidal monitoring
and marine reserves. Visit the Project
Oceanography web site to download a teacher packet. Click

National
Geographic Societys Sustainable Seas Expeditions
Sustainable Seas Expeditions was a joint project
of the National Geographic Society and National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration to explore, conduct research and
develop public education programs about the national marine
sanctuaries.
