Pakistan Power Toolkit

Pakistan is presently facing severe power shortage of 4500-MW and this situation will probably prevail unit 2010. This could be a great opportunity for US firms providing equipment, especially in the hydro and thermal generation fields. The GOP is also seriously looking at alternate sources of energy, including solar and wind power, which could be an enormous opportunity for US firms providing solar energy solutions to enter the Pakistan marketplace.

Pakistan’s power sector is at a development stage and needs massive investment; opportunities exist for foreign direct investment in energy sector. Pakistan has 19,439 Megawatts (MW) of total installed generation capacity from hydroelectric, thermal, and nuclear sources. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) and Chashma Nuclear Power Plant are the three major public sector organizations. WAPDA is involved in power generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in the country. The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), with a 1,756-MW capacity also involved in generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in the Sindh province was privatized in November 2005; a consortium lead by Hassan Group holds a 73 percent equity stake, while the remaining 27 percent shares are with the government. The Independent power projects (IPPs) are involved in power generation only. The total installed capacity of WAPDA stood at 11,298 MW during July-March 2006-07. Of which, hydroelectric accounts for 57.7 percent (6,463 MW), thermal accounts for 42.3 percent (4,835 MW), followed by the IPPs 5,873 MW or 30.3 percent, KESC (1,756 MW) or 9.0 percent and nuclear 462 MW or 2.4 percent of the total installed capacity.

Type Number of Projects Installed Capacity % Share in total Capacity
Hydel (WAPDA)  14 6,463  34%
 Thermal (WAPDA) 14  4,900 25%
 Thermal (KESC) 4  1,756 9%
 Thermal (IPPs) 16   5,859 30%
 Nuclear  2  462 2%
 Total    19,440 100%
