What is RSS? |

Today's youth are an investment in America's future. They are tomorrow's leaders. Youth, like adults, must deal with pressures of stress, blended families, peer pressure, unemployment, and other societal issues. The better prepared they become as decisionmakers with high respect for self and others, the less potential there will be for tension and conflict in building a stronger national and world community.

In Focus

• Six National 4-H Learning Priorities were identified in 2007 to focus on professional development for 4-H staff across the United States.
• CSREES directed the multi-agency effort to develop an Avian Influenza Lesson Plan for high school science students.
• Youth technology programs improve knowledge and skills as teens learn and teach technology to other youth and adults.
• 4-H Afterschool strives to increase the quality and quantity of after-school programs.
• The 4-H Youth Development program engages more than 6.5 million youth, ages 5-19, in growth experiences that emphasize the "learning by doing" philosophy.
• CSREES' National 4-H Headquarters and the 4-H state and local partners are sponsoring a new 4-H Programs of Distinction online database.

Partners/Partnership

• CSREES funds and provides leadership to GIS/GPS Integration Teams, which launch local mapping projects to help local decisionmakers understand community issues.
• The USDA Rural Development Mission Area provides grants and loans to finance buildings and small businesses in rural communities with youth programs.
• National 4-H Council partners with CSREES and 4-H at all levels, fostering innovative programming and promoting private sector partnerships supporting 4-H.

Selected Results and Impacts

• EFNEP Impact Reports include data and evaluations on various EFNEP components.
• CYFAR programs in 46 states and territories reached 48,654 youth and families at 216 community sites in 2003.
• In 2003, 4-H youth development programs engaged more than seven million youth, ages 5-19, in community programs, with 450,000 adult and teen volunteers.
