Helping U.S. Book Publishers Go Global

In the past few years the Commercial Service has made significant efforts to help the U.S. Publishing industry penetrate international markets by establishing a Publishing Team.  This Team is a network of Commercial Service professionals both in the U.S. and in the Commercial Sections of U.S. Embassies in a number of countries overseas. Together, we have created publishing industry market research, established a presence at a number of trade shows throughout the world, and tailored our services to better suit the publishing industry.

Market Research:

Concise market research reports are available on a number of countries including Chile, Spain, Denmark, China, Taiwan, UK, Thailand and Greece. If you are interested in obtaining any of these reports, please contact Christina or you can search in the market research library (registration required).

Catalog Shows:

If you are interested in promoting a few titles and gauging interest in a new market, then a catalog show might be right for you.  This past year, the Commercial Service represented hundreds of titles at the Doha and Taipei Book Fairs.  Our next event is the Hong Kong Book Fair. Although the deadline to register has passed, feel free to take a look and see what we offer to participating companies.

Book Fairs:

Our Team was present at BEA and will be part of the Frankfurt Bookfair helping you at these key shows for the publishing industry.  These two shows are central in promoting your books overseas. This year in Frankfurt we’ll be working with the Association of Educational Publishers to provide an Educational Publishers Pavilion (EPP). We’ll also be producing an American Publisher’s Guide for distribution at Frankfurt. If you are interested to learn more about either of these opportunities, please contact Christina.

Informational Webinars:

To help educate the U.S. Publishing community about overseas markets or current topics for going global, the Commercial Service occasionally offers informational webinars in which you can participate right from your own desk!  Join us for our upcoming webinar on Opportunities for American Publishers in Southeast Asia on September 1. Check out the information page here.

Recordings of our last webinar on Issues in International Copyright are still available. If you are interested in obtaining this audio/visual recording, please contact Christina.

Other services:

Have you gotten an unsolicited request for licensing or translation of one of your titles?  Our overseas specialists can do a due diligence check to be sure that the company requesting your title is legitimate.  Are you interested in forming a partnership with a distributor overseas?  One of our services can be tailor made to suite your needs.  Would you like to know about copyright issues?  We can provide telephone counseling on copyright and piracy issues in general, or in a specific market.  Basically, just give us a call, and we’ll see how we can help!

For more information on these opportunities and services, please contact Christina Sharkey at christina.sharkey@N0SPAM.mail.doc.gov or telephone (415) 705-1765.
