The Issue: Coastal erosion in the United States is responsible for approximately $500 million per year in property loss to coastal property owners, including damage to structures and loss of land. There are many types of natural hazards, such as hurricanes and shoreline erosion, which affect everyone who lives and works on the coast. The forces of nature cannot be controlled, but those who live or work near the coast can learn how to protect their homes, communities and businesses. Sea Grant: Sea Grant efforts can and will enhance preparedness and reduce losses of human life, property and environmental resources from coastal natural hazards.
