Reporter Resources

The Office of Public Affairs has developed some useful background information for reporters.

News Releases
Check news releases for enforcement actions – use the search bar to find a company, person, or issue.

Are you a reporter interested in receiving email notification of FTC news releases? If so, please email your name, affiliation, and areas of interest to opa@ftc.gov. Reporters interested in receiving daily early termination notices issued by the Commission pursuant to the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act should contact Mitch Katz at 202-326-2161.

Industries We Cover and Laws We Enforce
With almost 1,100 employees, the FTC has enforcement, regulatory, and administrative responsibilities under a variety of antitrust and consumer protection laws affecting virtually every area of commerce with some exceptions for banks, savings and loans, federal credit unions, insurance companies, and common carriers such as airlines. We leverage our resources and target our enforcement efforts at practices that cause the greatest harm to consumers.

Confidentiality of Investigations and Complaints
All FTC investigations are non-public. If a company itself announces that it is the subject of an FTC investigation we can confirm that fact. We can’t discuss complaints about specific companies or the status of ongoing investigations. Broad categories of complaints filed with FTC and other organizations can be found on our Consumer Sentinel website.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests
Visit the FTC’s Freedom of Information Act page to learn more about our FOIA request process.
