EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Student Temporary Employment Program (Student Assistant)

The Secret Service Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) is designed to provide federal employment opportunities to students so that they can resume or continue their education without interruptions caused by financial pressures. STEP provides maximum flexibility to both the student and manager because the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals.

Steps to Becoming a Student Assistant

Requirements and Qualifications

To be considered you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment during the upcoming semester or quarter as a diploma/certificate/degree seeking student in high school, or in an educational institution not above the graduate level that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body
  • Maintain a satisfactory academic record of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Self certify typing ability of 40 words per minute
  • Not be a son or daughter of a current Secret Service employee
Top Secret Clearance

Applicants must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug screening and extensive background investigation. Some positions require the completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination. Completion of a full investigation is required before appointment.

Students may be appointed based on the results of a preliminary background investigation. However, continued employment is contingent upon completion of the full background.

Follow this link to learn more about the background investigation.

Appointment

Under this program, student assistants are eligible for reappointment each year as long as the conditions listed under Requirements and Qualifications are still met.

Pay and Work Schedule

Student assistants work part-time while school is in session and can work part-time or full-time during summers and official school breaks. While school is in session, the work schedule will be limited to a minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 32 hours per week. Working hours are determined by the office to which a student assistant is assigned.

The pay will depend on the education and work experience a candidate possesses. As a student assistant advances in their education, they may become eligible for promotions based on work performance, grade point average and credits earned. Pay is based on the General Schedule (GS) grades 1-5.

Assignments

Most assignments are of a clerical nature and no previous experience is required. Student assistants are eligible for paid annual and sick leave. For every 20 hours worked, one hour of sick leave and one hour of annual leave will be accrued.

Conditions of Continued Employment

At the beginning of each semester/quarter, each student will be asked to produce a letter of verification from their educational institution showing proof of enrollment in school for the current semester/quarter either as a part-time or as a full-time student.

A transcript or grades for each semester/quarter is required to show that a student still maintains a GPA of 2.5 or better.
