Internship Opportunity with the Detroit US Export Assistance Center

Description:
As a Commercial Service Intern for the US Department of Commerce you will be expected to assist International Trade Specialists on various day-to-day operations, conduct yourself in a professional manner in person and on the phone, have knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc), and be dependable.

What kind of work can I expect as an intern?
You will work in conjunction with our Pontiac team of International Trade Specialists on a range of international business projects designed to give practical assistance to businesses in the region. You will be asked to research questions and help in the preparation of client proposals with market research and evaluation. In doing so, you will have access to our market research as well as opportunities for contact with our colleagues in our offices in U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world. You will gain familiarity with export finance, marketing, cultural issues, and rigorous analyses in a real-world setting.

Daily Internship Activities

  • Provide support to International Trade Specialists in outreach, market research, trade promotion, and international trade and policy development
  • Opportunity to take part in trade development meetings with American and foreign government officials and executives, in key industries
  • Research and analysis on commercial markets in Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East
  • Research on policy and regulatory issues involving global markets
  • Writing on international trade and regulatory issues involving trade negotiations
  • Planning and Promotion of industry trade events
  • Database management
  • Networking opportunities with major companies in Michigan and abroad

Major Areas of Study
All Business Majors, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, Law, International Studies and Relations, Marketing, Finance, and Foreign Language.

What requirements and qualifications do we look for in an intern?
You must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to work a minimum of 16-20 hours per week during one of our intern periods of Fall, Spring, or Summer. Some general qualifications include a strong and consistent academic background, solid analytical skills, and the ability to present information – written and orally – in an organized, logical manner. We look for evidence of personal motivation, resourcefulness, initiative and professionalism. This intern program is on a volunteer basis and is unpaid, however academic credit may be offered as arranged by your educational institution.
