Description: This five-day course provides training in the
fundamentals of managing museum property.

Overview of the Interior Museum Program and the Office of Property
and Acquisition Management
How Museum Collections Support DOI and Bureau Missions
Managing Archive Collections
Guidance on Reporting Requirements
Scope of Collections Statement
Museum Documentation (Accessions, Cataloging, Loans, & Deaccessioning)
Museum Collection Preservation
Storing and Exhibiting Museum Property
Museum Protection (Fire Protection, Security, and Emergency Management)
Working with Non-Federal repositories
Ideas on how to use museum collections
Participants: Curators, Museum Specialists, Property Managers,
Archeologists, & other resource specialists with museum responsibilities,
both within federal agencies and at partner repositories.
Course length: 36 hours

Curating
Natural History Collections Course |

Description: This course provides training in the fundamentals
of managing natural history collections. The course is broken into
two parts. The first 2 days of the training will focus on general
museum property management topics. The final 3 days of the training
will focus on issues specific to different types of natural history
collections. Students are welcome to attend all or part of the training.
General Topics include:
How museums support bureau missions
Planning documents
Scope of collection statements
Documenting collections
Managing archival collections
Integrated Pest Management
Working with Non-Federal Facilities
Exhibiting museum property
Security/Fire protection
Emergency management planning
Natural History specific topics include:
History of the preparation and care of natural history specimens
Preparation, care, and preservation of wet specimens
Basic Taxonomy
Natural History laws and mandates as they relate to museum collections
Planning for curation of natural history collections with partners
Caring for Vertebrate, Insect, Tree Ring, Plant, and Paleontology,
and Geology specimens.
Testing for toxic preservatives
Participants: Curators, Museum Specialists, Property Managers,
Archeologists, Natural History Specialists, & other resource
specialists with museum responsibilities, both within federal agencies
and at partner repositories.
Course length: 40 hours
Class size: 30 participants
